From Arriondas to the top of the Fito it’s 6 miles (9.7 km) at an average of 5.6%: 1,795 ft (547 m) of climbing on the AS-260, the road from Arriondas to Colunga. It’s one of the most popular climbs in Asturias and one the Vuelta a España has used most often.
Our two sources agree: altimetrias.net gives 6.1 miles (9.74 km), 1,795 ft (547 m) and 5.62%, and CyclingCols 6.2 miles (9.9 km), 1,837 ft (560 m) and 5.5%, with a steepest pitch of 10%.
What the climb is like
You start at the railroad underpass on the way out of Arriondas. Right away you’re in dense forest, on ramps that never go beyond 9-10% and past several junctions: always stay on the main road. Halfway up there’s a slight dip that lets you recover, and after that the grade stays mostly between 6% and 8% until you top out by the Fito picnic area. The trees hide the views for most of the climb, so the payoff comes at the end: from the viewpoint you see the Picos de Europa on one side and the Bay of Biscay on the other.
History
CyclingCols counts 22 Vuelta crossings. Among the most recent riders first over the top are Wout van Aert (2024), Robert Stannard (2022) and Omar Fraile (2016). Arriondas is only a few miles from Cangas de Onís and the Lagos de Covadonga. It was in this area, during his last Vuelta in 1996, that Miguel Induráin pulled out of the race.
When to go, water and traffic
You can ride it year-round: the altitude is low and snow is rare. What’s normal in Asturias is rain and fog, so ride with lights. The road is wide, in good condition and has moderate traffic, heavier in summer. There’s a fountain 330 ft (100 m) from the start and another about half a mile (1 km) from the top that doesn’t always have water.
What gearing to use
This is a climb to ride seated and at a steady pace. At 3 W/kg (watts per kilo of body weight) and 159 lb (72 kg) you’ll average about 9 mph (14.5 km/h): with a 34x25 that’s about 85 rpm. A 34x28 is enough for any level. Check your combinations in the gear calculator.
Tips
- Use the easy stretch halfway up to drink: after that it doesn’t let up.
- Descend the north side toward Colunga and come back along the coast for a great loop.
- Link it with the Lagos de Covadonga if you’re after a really tough day.
