What the climb is like

  • San Isidro to La Georgina (24.5 miles / 39.4 km, 6%). A long, steady climb on the Pan-American Highway (Route 2). The grade rarely goes past 8%, with tight bends and a few potholed stretches. Around km 40 (mile 25) is La Georgina, a false summit with a restaurant.
  • The finish (3.1 miles / 5 km, 5.7%). After a short descent of a little over 0.6 miles (1 km), the road climbs again to the highest point of the Pan-American.

The segment profile figures are the ones the 2024 Vuelta a Costa Rica published (39.4 km at 6% and another 5 km at 5.7%). PJAMM gives 28.9 miles (46.5 km) at 5.3% with about 8,200 ft (2,500 m) of gain, and La Nación counts about 24.9 miles (40 km) from downtown San Isidro to La Georgina. Wikipedia puts the highest point of the road at about 10,974 ft (3,345 m); other reports give 10,945 ft (3,336 m).

Its history

Before the highway, crossing these mountains took three or four days on foot or horseback, and tradition says the cold and rain killed many farmers: hence the name, Mountain of Death. Today it is the big climb of the Vuelta a Costa Rica, which often climbs it from Pérez Zeledón (the canton San Isidro belongs to) on the way to Cartago or San José. In 2024 the women’s race climbed it from San Isidro for the first time.

When to go, weather, water and traffic

The dry season, December to April, is best; from May to November it rains a lot and fog hides the views. It is cold at the top for the tropics: between 34 and 55 °F (1 and 13 °C), compared with about 68 °F (20 °C) in San Isidro. At 10,974 ft (3,345 m) the air holds about a third less oxygen than at sea level.

Traffic is the main danger: it is the country’s main road to the south, with buses and trucks, almost no shoulder and tight bends where vehicles pass close. Use a rear light even in daytime. The only reliable place for water and food on the climb is the restaurant at La Georgina, around km 40 (mile 25).

What gearing to use

The grade is moderate and steady: a 34x28 gets you up at 3 W/kg (watts per kilogram of body weight); on 6% you ride about 8.7 mph (14 km/h) at 91 rpm, and a 34x30 or 34x32 gives you some margin for the final hours. Compare options in the gear calculator.

Tips

  1. Start very early: fog and rain usually arrive after midday.
  2. Carry food for three hours; do not count on anything until La Georgina.
  3. Keep a warm layer in your pocket: descending from 10,800 ft (3,300 m) in wet clothes is dangerous.
