What the climb is like
You start in Sort, by the post office, following the signs for Adrall. It’s a long, very steady climb: the grade sits between 5% and 7% almost the whole way, with no obvious rest stretches but no ramps that break your rhythm either. Climbfinder counts ten hairpins. The road is wide and well marked, although in 2025 the pavement was quite cracked. Even though the area is wooded, there’s almost no shade. From the top you can see the mountains of the Pallars and the Alt Urgell.
History
The Cantó is a regular in the Volta a Catalunya, and the Vuelta a España and the Tour de France have climbed it too. According to CyclingCols, riders first over the top include Jurgen Van Goolen (2007 Vuelta), Nicolas Edet (2013 Vuelta), Thomas De Gendt (2016 Tour) and Juan Ayuso (2025 Vuelta).
Sort, on the banks of the Noguera Pallaresa, is famous for its lottery shop, although the town’s name has nothing to do with luck (sort in Catalan).
When to go, water and traffic
May to October. In winter it can snow near the top. There are fountains in Sort (not at the start itself), the Font de la Matraca at kilometer 1.1 (mile 0.7), in a picnic area, and another inside the village of Vilamur. Traffic is light for a national highway.
What gearing to use
At 3 W/kg (watts per kilo of body weight) and 159 lb (72 kg) you’ll average about 9.3 mph (15 km/h): with a 34x25 that’s about 88 rpm. A 34x28 is more than enough for the whole climb. Check your combinations in the gear calculator.
Tips
- It’s a climb for steady pacing: find a power you can hold for more than an hour and stick to it.
- Fill up at the Font de la Matraca: after that there’s no water by the road.
- Pair it with the Bonaigua or Port Ainé, both a short distance from Sort.
