From La Alberca to the Peña de Francia shrine (5,614 ft / 1,711 m) it’s 8.5 miles (13.7 km) at an average of 5.3%: 2,372 ft (723 m) of climbing. Altimetrias.net gives 13.68 km and 2,372 ft (723 m); Climbfinder, 13.6 km and 2,454 ft (748 m), with the worst 100 m at 9.6% and nine hairpins.
What the climb is like
You leave La Alberca and, after a short descent, turn off the SA-202 between La Alberca and El Cabaco onto the SA-203 on the left, toward the Peña and Monsagro. After that, just follow the signs for the shrine. The first half climbs through forest, with plenty of shade and a moderate grade. From the Paso de los Lobos the road narrows, the trees disappear and the climb becomes more exposed, with ramps approaching 10% and the final bends clinging to the rock. The pavement is in good shape and has lane markings.
At the top, the shrine of the Virgen de la Peña de Francia, built like a high-mountain refuge, looks out over the Campo Charro, Salamanca’s plain of oak pastureland.
Where you are
La Alberca is one of the best-known villages in the Sierra de Francia, with its traditional half-timbered architecture. The area was resettled in the Middle Ages by people of French origin, hence the names. Ibex live on the Peña, and the vegetation at the summit is almost alpine.
When to go, water and traffic
Spring to fall. In winter it can snow and freeze at the top, and the wind is almost constant on the upper section, with strong gusts. Traffic is light on weekdays and heavier on holidays. There are fountains at the El Casarito picnic area (kilometer 1.2, mile 0.7) and at the Simón Vela fountain (kilometer 7, mile 4.3), and water at the shrine if it’s open.
What gearing to use
At 3 W/kg (watts per kilo of body weight) and 159 lb (72 kg) you’ll average about 9.3 mph (15 km/h): with a 34x25 that’s about 90 rpm. With a headwind on the upper section, a 34x28 gives you some margin. Check your combinations in the gear calculator.
Tips
- Bring a windbreaker: it’s almost always windy at the top and the descent is cold.
- Use the shade of the first half to eat; higher up you’re exposed.
- Combine it with a loop through the Sierra de Francia villages, such as Mogarraz or Miranda del Castañar.
