Specialized publishes a height chart for each family of bikes in its official size guide (checked in October 2026). These are the charts for its best-selling models, checked against the chart a Specialized dealer shows on the Tarmac page. The ranges are the brand’s own, including where they overlap or leave a gap between two sizes: we haven’t evened them out. The feet and inches are converted from Specialized’s centimeters to the nearest inch, and they match the imperial chart in its US size guide, which differs by an inch on a handful of sizes (the 54 Allez, for example, is listed up to 5 ft 10 in).

If you’re between two sizes

On the Tarmac the jumps are 2 to 3 inches (5-8 cm) of height, so a lot of riders land on a line (5 ft 9 in or 5 ft 11 in). Specialized recommends test riding the bike or using its fit tool, which looks at more than height. As a rule of thumb:

  • Check the reach (the horizontal distance from the bottom bracket to the head tube) of both sizes on the model’s page. With long arms or good flexibility, go larger.
  • If you’ll spend long hours in the saddle or your back bothers you, the smaller size with a slightly longer stem or a few spacers usually fits better.
  • On the S1-S6 scale, sizing goes by reach: pick by how you want the bike to handle (shorter and more playful, or longer and more stable), not by saddle height, which the dropper post takes care of.

To decide with numbers, measure your inseam with how to find your bike size, use the bike size calculator and compare the two sizes, or your current bike, in the bike geometry comparison. The size chart by brand puts Specialized next to the other brands.

Frequently asked questions

What size Specialized Tarmac do I need if I'm 5'9"?

You're right on the line between the 54 (5 ft 7 in to 5 ft 9 in, 170-175 cm) and the 56 (5 ft 9 in to 5 ft 11 in, 175-180 cm). With long legs or if you like a stretched-out position, the 56; if you'd rather ride shorter and more upright, the 54.

What do Specialized S1 to S6 sizes mean?

They're the sizes for its trail and enduro bikes (Stumpjumper, Status, Enduro, Turbo Levo). They're based on reach rather than seat tube length, so the ranges overlap: an S3 covers 5 ft 5 in to 5 ft 11 in (165-180 cm) and an S4 5 ft 8 in to 6 ft 2 in (173-188 cm).

Are Tarmac, Roubaix and Aethos sizes the same?

Yes: Specialized gives the same height ranges for all three, from the 49 (5 ft 1 in to 5 ft 4 in) to the 61 (6 ft 2 in to 6 ft 5 in). The Roubaix has a taller front end, so the same size gives a more comfortable position.
