Europe's bike market kept correcting in 2025, but at two different speeds. Germany sold 3.8 million bikes (−3.9%) and more than half were electric. France fell harder (−6.2%) after its national purchase subsidy ended. Italy dropped 4%. Spain held steady in units (−0.7%) and sold more expensive bikes: €1,281.71 on average. And the UK grew in value for the first time since 2020.
All prices are in euros (€), the currency of Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Portugal; the UK figures are in pounds (£) and the US figures in dollars ($). We don't convert them, because exchange rates move and the associations report in their own currency. European prices also include VAT (sales tax of 19-23%, depending on the country), unlike US sticker prices.
Key figures
- 3.8 million bikes sold in Germany, Europe's largest market; 52.7% were e-bikes.
- 1,093,478 bikes sold in Spain, 21.5% of them electric.
- €2,550 is the average price of an e-bike in Germany (−3.8%) and €1,999 in France (−1%).
- 507,000 e-bikes sold in France, 16% fewer than in 2024.
- €5.85 billion in bike and e-bike sales in Germany, three times as much as France.

How many bikes are sold
Germany sells almost as many bikes as France, Italy and Spain combined (3.8 million versus 4.2 million). According to ZIV, the German industry association, 77% of company leasing bikes are electric. Bike leasing is an employee benefit that is very popular in Germany: the employer leases the bike and the employee pays for it out of pre-tax salary. Italy sells more units than Spain or France because most of what it sells are regular, non-electric bikes (1,047,000 of 1,303,000).

- The United Kingdom, Portugal and the United States do not publish 2025 unit sales.
The 2025 declines continue the correction after the pandemic boom, when demand spiked and shops overstocked. In France, the end of the national purchase subsidy in February 2025 also weighed on sales. In Spain, AMBE (the Spanish bicycle industry association) describes a market that is flat in units and moving up in price.
How big the e-bike share is
E-bikes are now the majority of the German market and a little more than one in four bikes in France. In Spain and Italy they are about one in five. In almost every country with data, e-bike volume fell in 2025: −16% in France, −7% in Italy and −4.8% in Germany.

| Country | E-bike share |
|---|---|
| Germany | 52.7% |
| France | 28.0% |
| Spain | 21.5% |
| Italy* | 19.6% |
- * Italy: BikeRatio calculation: 256,000 e-bikes out of 1,303,000 bikes (ANCMA).
A smaller share of units doesn't mean e-bikes matter less in money terms. In France, e-bikes are 28% of units but 54% of value; in Spain, 21.5% of units and 35.2% of the value of bikes sold.
Average bike prices
Average e-bike prices dropped in 2025 because of discounting: in Germany from €2,650 to €2,550, and in France by 1%, to €1,999. Regular bikes held at €500 in Germany and rose 4% in France, to €638.

| Germany | €2,550 | €500 |
| France | €1,999 | €638 |
| Spain* | €2,100 | €1,060 |
- * Spain: BikeRatio calculation based on AMBE data (see methodology).
- Italy, the United Kingdom, Portugal and the United States do not publish 2025 average prices.
Spain is a different story: the average non-electric bike comes out at about €1,060, twice the German figure. It's not that the same bike costs twice as much; Spaniards buy different bikes. In Spain, mountain bikes (50.81% of value) and road plus gravel bikes (37.94%) dominate, while in Germany cheap city and trekking bikes carry a lot of weight. AMBE doesn't publish a price for each type; we calculated it from its own figures (see the methodology). What to look for so you don't overpay for an e-bike is in how to choose an e-bike, and which kind of bike fits each use is in types of bikes.
How much money the market moves

| Country | Sales value |
|---|---|
| Germany | €5,850M |
| France | €1,861M |
| Spain* | €1,402M |
- * Spain: units × AMBE average price; the whole industry, including accessories, totals €2,177M.
- New bikes and e-bikes only, without parts or accessories. The United Kingdom (≈ £1,900M) includes accessories and services, so it is not compared.
In Spain, the whole industry (bikes, components, accessories and apparel) had sales of €2.177 billion in 2025, down 5.9%, according to AMBE.
The UK, the US and Portugal
These three countries don't publish comparable 2025 figures, so we leave them out of the charts:
- United Kingdom. The Bicycle Association estimates a market of just under £1.9 billion in 2025 (+5%), the first growth since 2020, with non-electric bike volume up 6% and e-bikes up 2%; e-bike value rose 10% thanks to e-MTBs. The figure includes parts, accessories and services, and the release gives no unit counts.
- United States. The latest public figure from PeopleForBikes is for 2024: a market of about $6.6 billion (−8%), with e-bikes at roughly 7% of units sold in the bike shops tracked by the research firm Circana. That number doesn't include direct-to-consumer online sales, which the association estimates at about 450,000 e-bikes in 2024.
- Portugal. Its association, ABIMOTA, highlights manufacturing: according to its president, the country exported €777 million worth of bikes in 2025 (+4%), a record, and exports about 95% of what it builds. We found no published data on domestic sales.
Methodology
- Sources. We used each country's annual report from its bicycle industry association: ZIV (Germany), Union Sport & Cycle (France), AMBE (Spain), ANCMA (Italy), the Bicycle Association (UK), PeopleForBikes (US) and ABIMOTA (Portugal). For Germany and Spain we read the association's own document; for France, Italy and Portugal, a news report that quotes its data, linked in the sources.
- What "bikes sold" means. New bikes, with and without a motor, sold in the country in 2025 through every channel each association measures. The methods aren't identical (manufacturer surveys, retail panels, import data), so cross-country comparisons are indicative.
- Our own calculations. (1) Italy: e-bike share = 256,000 ÷ 1,303,000. (2) France: average price of all bikes = €1,861 million ÷ 1.837 million. (3) Spain: AMBE publishes units (1,093,478), the average price (€1,281.71) and the e-bike share of units (21.5%) and of value (35.2%). From that, the value of bikes is 1,093,478 × 1,281.71 ≈ €1,402 million; the average e-bike costs (35.2% × €1,402 million) ÷ (21.5% × 1,093,478) ≈ €2,100, and the average non-electric bike (64.8% × €1,402 million) ÷ (78.5% × 1,093,478) ≈ €1,060.
- Rounding. Calculated prices are rounded to €10; Germany's units are ZIV's rounded figures (3.8 million and about 2 million e-bikes).
What we couldn't confirm
We don't publish figures we haven't seen in the source or in several reports that cite it. That's why these are missing: 2025 unit sales for the UK, the US and Portugal; average prices for Italy, the UK, Portugal and the US; and Italy's market value. If an association publishes them, we'll update the study and note the date. Want to see what these bikes cost in days of work? We calculate it in the BikeRatio Index.
