At 3, the usual choice is a 12- or 14-inch balance bike. If your child has mastered the balance bike and is taller than 3 ft 1 in (95 cm), they can move up to a 14" pedal bike. Most kids this age are between 2 ft 11 in and 3 ft 5 in (88-103 cm).

How tall is a 3-year-old?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), half of 3-year-old boys are taller than 37.8 in (96.1 cm) and half of girls are taller than 37.4 in (95.1 cm). Between the 3rd and 97th percentiles (94% of kids) the range is wide: from 2′11″ to 3′5″ (88-103 cm). In the US, the CDC growth charts give a median of 37.4 in (95.0 cm) for boys and 37.0 in (93.9 cm) for girls. That's why age is a guide, but height is what decides the bike: measure your child barefoot against a wall before you buy.
| 3rd percentile | Median | 97th percentile | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boys | 35.1 in (89.1 cm) | 37.8 in (96.1 cm) | 40.6 in (103.1 cm) |
| Girls | 34.6 in (87.9 cm) | 37.4 in (95.1 cm) | 40.2 in (102.2 cm) |
What size bike they need
Your child is right on the line. Balance bikes fit kids up to 3 ft 3 in-3 ft 5 in (100-105 cm) and 14" pedal bikes start at 3 ft-3 ft 1 in (92-95 cm), so there's a range where both work. The key question isn't height but whether they can already balance: if they glide several yards with their feet up, they're ready for pedals. If not, a 14" balance bike (like the Woom GO 1 PLUS, for 3 ft 1 in-3 ft 7 in / 95-110 cm) will last them until about 4½. Check the inseam: Woom's 14" pedal bike has a minimum seat height of 15.5 in (39.4 cm).
| Size | Height | Inseam |
|---|---|---|
| Balance bike | 2′8″–3′5″ (82–105 cm) | 12–18 in (30–45 cm) |
| 14-inch | 3′0″–3′7″ (92–110 cm) | 15–19 in (38–48 cm) |
How to check the fit
On the balance bike, feet flat on the ground and the seat 0.5-1 in (1-3 cm) below the inseam. On a 14" pedal bike, seated, they should reach the ground with the balls of both feet, not just the toes: on their first pedal strokes they'll need to put their feet down fast. With the pedal at the bottom, the knee stays slightly bent; you'll raise the seat as they go.
Ideal bike weight
A 3-year-old weighs about 31 lb (14 kg). By the 30% rule, their bike shouldn't weigh more than 9-10 lb (4-4.5 kg). Balance bikes easily meet that; 14" pedal bikes vary a lot: the Woom GO 2 weighs 11 lb (5 kg) and the Btwin 100 14", 16.3 lb (7.4 kg), half of what the child weighs.
Brakes: coaster brake or hand brakes
At 3, many kids can squeeze a small lever, but not hard. That's why some 14" bikes have a coaster brake (you brake by pedaling backward), like the Btwin 100. Woom doesn't use them: its bikes have two short-reach hand brakes. If you go with a coaster brake, make sure there's at least one hand brake too so they can start learning.
Gears
None. 14" bikes are single-speed, and that's how it should be: less weight and nothing to distract them.
Training wheels or a balance bike
If they already ride a balance bike, they don't need training wheels: they'll go straight to pedaling within a few days. If they're starting from zero and you buy a 14" bike, take the pedals off at first and use it as a balance bike. Training wheels slow learning down: in the Portuguese study of 2,005 families, kids who used them rode on their own almost two years later than those who started on a balance bike.
What to look for when you buy
- Can they balance yet? If not, get a balance bike.
- Inseam longer than the minimum seat height (check the specs).
- Under 11 lb (5 kg) if it's a pedal bike.
- Small, light-action brake levers, or a coaster brake plus a hand brake.
- A fully enclosed chain guard so fingers and clothes don't get caught.
Frequently asked questions
Can a 3-year-old ride a bike with pedals?
Yes, if they've mastered a balance bike and are taller than 3 ft-3 ft 1 in (92-95 cm). Many kids who start on a balance bike move to pedals between 3 and 4 without ever using training wheels.
What size bike for a 3-year-old?
A 12- or 14-inch balance bike, or a 14" pedal bike if they're taller than 3 ft 1 in (95 cm) and can already balance.
Coaster brake or hand brakes for a 3-year-old?
A coaster brake is easier at first, but it stops them from rolling the pedal back to get ready to start. A bike with small two-finger levers teaches them right away to brake the way they always will.
