A 2-year-old needs a balance bike (no pedals) with 10- or 12-inch wheels and a seat that goes down to about 12 in (30 cm). They're not old enough or tall enough for a pedal bike yet: the smallest ones, with 14" wheels, start at 3 ft (92 cm) tall.

Calculate with their exact height
How tall is a 2-year-old?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), half of 2-year-old boys are taller than 34.3 in (87.1 cm) and half of girls are taller than 33.7 in (85.7 cm). Between the 3rd and 97th percentiles (94% of kids) the range is wide: from 2′7″ to 3′1″ (80-93 cm). In the US, the CDC growth charts give a median of 34.1 in (86.5 cm) for boys and 33.5 in (85.0 cm) for girls. That's why age is a guide, but height is what decides the bike: measure your child barefoot against a wall before you buy.
| 3rd percentile | Median | 97th percentile | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Boys | 32.0 in (81.4 cm) | 34.3 in (87.1 cm) | 36.6 in (92.9 cm) |
| Girls | 31.3 in (79.6 cm) | 33.7 in (85.7 cm) | 36.1 in (91.8 cm) |
What size bike they need
Almost every balance bike on the market fits kids from about 2 ft 8 in-2 ft 9 in (82-85 cm) to 3 ft 3 in-3 ft 5 in (100-105 cm) tall (Woom, Decathlon, Trek), so most 2-year-olds land right at the bottom of that range. What matters isn't total height but inseam: it has to be longer than the bike's lowest seat height. Islabikes asks for at least a 12 in (30 cm) inseam on its 12" model; Frog, 12.5 in (32 cm). Measure the inseam with a book, barefoot, and compare before you buy. If your child is under 2 ft 8 in (82 cm), wait a few months: a ride-on toy or a low tricycle will do in the meantime.
| Size | Height | Inseam |
|---|---|---|
| Balance bike | 2′8″–3′5″ (82–105 cm) | 12–18 in (30–45 cm) |
How to check the fit
Sitting on the seat, your child should have both feet flat on the ground with the knees slightly bent. Set the seat 0.5-1 in (1-3 cm) below their inseam. On tiptoe, they won't dare push off; with the knees bent too much, running with the bike gets hard. The handlebar goes roughly at belly-button height, so they sit fairly upright.
Ideal bike weight
Weight is everything here: your child has to pick the bike up after a fall and drag it when they're tired. Good ones weigh 6.6-7.7 lb (3-3.5 kg) (the Woom GO 1 weighs 6.6 lb / 3 kg and the Btwin Runride 500, 7.5 lb / 3.4 kg). Skip solid steel or wooden models over 10 lb (4.5 kg).
Brakes: coaster brake or hand brakes
At 2, almost no child brakes by hand: they stop with their feet. Still, if the bike has a small brake lever (the Woom GO 1 has a rear hand brake), it's a good time to discover it through play. It isn't essential at this age.
Gears
No gears: a balance bike has no drivetrain. That's exactly what keeps it light and simple.
Training wheels or a balance bike
No training wheels and no pedals: at this age, what they learn is balance. In a survey of 2,005 families in Portugal, kids who started on a balance bike rode on their own at 4.2 years old on average; those who started with training wheels, at 6. Start with walking while seated, then running, and one day they'll lift their feet on their own.
What to look for when you buy
- A seat that goes down to their inseam minus 0.5-1 in (1-3 cm) (check the minimum seat height in the specs).
- Under 9 lb (4 kg), ideally close to 6.6 lb (3 kg).
- Air or foam tires: air tires grip and cushion better; foam tires never go flat.
- A steering limiter: it prevents sharp turns and silly falls.
- A helmet that fits, from day one.
Frequently asked questions
Is a tricycle or a balance bike better for a 2-year-old?
If they can put both feet flat on the ground (about a 12 in / 30 cm inseam), the balance bike: it teaches balance, which is what they'll need for a real bike later. A tricycle is for younger kids or just as a toy.
How much should a balance bike for a 2-year-old weigh?
Between 6.6 and 7.7 lb (3-3.5 kg). A 2-year-old weighs about 26 lb (12 kg), and the bike shouldn't be more than 30% of their weight: about 7.7 lb (3.5 kg).
What size balance bike for a 2-year-old?
A 10- or 12-inch balance bike with a seat that goes down to about 12 in (30 cm). The 14" balance bikes are for kids 3 and up.
