Frequently asked questions

What are gear inches?

Chainring ÷ cog × wheel diameter in inches: the size of the wheel that would cover the same distance per pedal stroke on a direct-drive bike. A 50×11 on a road bike is about 121 gear inches; a 34×34, about 27.

What gearing do I need to climb steep hills?

For 8-10% grades at a comfortable pace, most riders need a low gear of 25 gear inches or less. Check it against your power in the gear ratio calculator.

Does tire size change gear inches?

A little: going from 25 to 32 mm tires raises every gear by about 2%. That's why there's a chart for each wheel type.
