What Size Bike for a 12-Year-Old?

At 12, most kids are already on 26- or 27.5-inch wheels. Those who've hit their growth spurt can ride a small adult size.

A 12-year-old usually needs a 26" or 27.5" bike in size XS. The average height at this age is about 4 ft 11 in (150 cm). If they're shorter than 4 ft 7 in (140 cm), still a 24"; if they're taller than 5 ft 1 in-5 ft 3 in (155-160 cm), an adult size XS or S.

Calculate with their exact height

How tall is a 12-year-old?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), half of 12-year-old boys are taller than 58.7 in (149.1 cm) and half of girls are taller than 59.5 in (151.2 cm). Between the 3rd and 97th percentiles (94% of kids) the range is wide: from 4′6″ to 5′5″ (136-164 cm). In the US, the CDC growth charts give a median of 58.7 in (149.1 cm) for boys and 59.5 in (151.2 cm) for girls. That's why age is a guide, but height is what decides the bike: measure your child barefoot against a wall before you buy.

What size bike they need

There's almost 11 in (27 cm) between the 3rd and 97th percentiles at this age: from 4 ft 6 in to 5 ft 5 in (136-164 cm). That's why all three options coexist at 12. Kids' 26" bikes fit from 4 ft 7 in to 5 ft 5 in (140-165 cm) (Woom), and adult XS mountain bikes cover roughly 4 ft 8 in-4 ft 9 in to 5 ft 1 in (142-145 to 155 cm) (Trek, Specialized). The difference is in the details: kids' bikes have shorter cranks, levers for small hands and less weight.

How to check the fit

With adult bikes, you can use the grown-up rules: saddle height from the inseam (try the saddle height calculator) and frame size from height. Check that they clear the top tube standing over the bike and that they reach the handlebar seated without stretching.

Ideal bike weight

Look for under 26 lb (12 kg). Light kids' 26" bikes come in around 21-22 lb (9.5-10 kg) (Woom EXPLORE 6, 21 lb / 9.5 kg without pedals); many entry-level adult bikes weigh quite a bit more. If they'll do long rides, every pound counts.

Brakes: coaster brake or hand brakes

Hydraulic discs. Adult bikes almost always have them; check that the levers have reach adjustment for their hand.

Gears

Adult bikes have 9-12 gears. If they'll ride mountain trails, make sure the biggest cog is generous (42-51 teeth) so they can climb without getting off.

Training wheels or a balance bike

At 12, they can ride in a group, join a cycling club or youth team, or do multi-day rides with the family. Teach them basic maintenance: pumping up tires, lubing the chain and changing a tube.

What to look for when you buy

  • Under 4 ft 7 in (140 cm): 24". From 4 ft 7 in to 5 ft 1 in (140-155 cm): 26" or 27.5" XS. Taller: adult size.
  • For adult sizes, use the bike size calculator.
  • Short cranks: check the crank length calculator with their inseam.
  • Hydraulic disc brakes and adjustable-reach levers.
  • Think about resale: they'll grow fast.
